Happy New Year, Happy New You!

Break bad habits to improve your dental health.

New Year resolutions...it's always a great time to set some targets for the new and improved you. Common things like eating healthier, exercising more, read more, etc.

Quite often though, these promises you make to yourself never stick. As your teeth form part of your overall well being, we suggest you try and make it a New Year's resolution to look after your teeth.

After all, it's not a very hard resolution to see through if you follow these simple steps.

Regular visits to the dentist
It is recommended that you visit the dentist for a dental assessment every six months. They are great opportunities for our dentist to examine your teeth and mouth and identify any potential problems as early as possible. Since it is the New Year and you have probably consumed some sweets, it is an optimal time to check the status of your dental hygiene and receive a professional clean. And if anything does need attention, we can help you fix it.

Daily dental routine
Along with brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day, it is important to combine flossing into the routine. Flossing prevents plaque build-up by removing left-behind food particles that may be stuck between teeth and gums. A sufficient clean maintains oral hygiene and flossing will fight bacteria growth and periodontal disease.

Cut down on sugar and acidic drinks
Reducing your sugar intake does not mean you have to give up your favourite treats for good. It just means that you are not going to have as many. Foods and drinks that are high in sugar and acid can damage your teeth enamel and cause cavities. So go easy on lollies, soft drinks and sugary juices. It also helps to brush after you have consumed sugar.

Eat healthier foods
Not only will eating more vegetables and fruit make it easier to meet your health goals, it can also help to remove plaque. Crunching on vegetables helps to brush off plaque from your teeth. They also contain far less sugar compared to processed foods.
